Relocation Story

Alan Down moved to Peace River from Strathmore

What’s your story? How did you end up relocating to Northwestern Alberta?

I saw that a job had opened up at Northern Sunrise County. I had previously worked in Peace River about 20 years ago, and I really like the area. This job was a great opportunity to move back with my family.

What was your first impression of Northwestern Alberta?

I had been in Peace River before, so I knew of the natural beauty of the area, but I hadn’t been here in over two decades. I was struck by it once again.

What surprised you the most about Northwestern Alberta?

The history of the area, which, prior to my arrival here I had very little knowledge of.

Compared to where you came from, how does Northwestern Alberta differ?

While I have only spent about four years in Peace River in total, I always got the feeling that there was a real sense of community here—perhaps due to the distance to larger centres like Edmonton.

In what ways have you integrated yourself into the community?

I’ve integrated primarily through work and shopping in the area. I also do lots of activities with my children, which has allowed me to meet people as well.

How do you entertain out-of-town guests?

My oldest son is coming to visit later in the summer, and we are planning a multi-day canoe trip down the Peace River.

Have you had any interesting wildlife encounters?

So far, just deer and moose, but we are always on the lookout for bears.

What is your ideal Sunday?

Fishing and hiking with my kids.

What is your ideal night out/date night?

We like to treat ourselves to a meal out. Fortunately, there are lots of good places to eat in Peace River such as Mr. Mikes and the Board ‘n’ Barrel.

What are some of your favourite outdoor activities in Northwestern Alberta?

Fishing, hiking, biking and snowshoeing.

In your experience, what is unique about Northwestern Alberta?

The history of the area and its wonderful natural beauty.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself as a long-term resident of Peace River, continuing to enjoy all the area has to offer.

What’s your advice to anyone thinking of relocating here?

Do it!
