On September 26, the community was invited to celebrate the grand opening of Manning’s Aurora Composite School.
The newly constructed K-12 school is the amalgamation of Paul Rowe Junior Senior High School and Manning Elementary School. Now home to more than 300 students, Aurora Composite features a state-of-the-art science lab, a beautifully curated music room and a brand-new gymnasium.
The school’s design emphasizes natural light, open learning spaces and modern amenities, creating an environment that encourages both collaboration and creativity.

“Most students will complete their entire education without ever setting foot in a brand-new facility,” said Dr. Jeff Thompson, Peace River School Division Superintendent of Schools. “Which makes today even more special and a profound source of pride for the entire community.”
The event was emceed by Grade 6 student Hannah Nauss and Grade 12 student Elika Davies. Land acknowledgements were offered by Ms. Georgina Supernault and Mrs. Della Koch of the Manning Métis Local 2020 organization, which grounded the celebration in community and history.

The Mighty Moose Band, under the direction of Mrs. Melody Taylor, opened the ceremony with “O Canada.” Greetings were brought by Hon. Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education and Childcare; Peace River School Division Board Chair Crystal Owens; Town of Manning Mayor Robert McLeod; and County of Northern Lights Deputy Reeve Brenda Yasinski.
The ribbon cutting included PRSD board trustees, school administration, kindergarten student Jarrett Kamieniecki, and Grade 12 student Chas Reinders. Guests were also treated to a special performance by kindergarten to grade 6 students, again led by Mrs. Taylor, before closing remarks from Principal Kim Matheson and Superintendent Dr. Thompson.

“Beyond the bricks, metal and wooden beams, this building is a symbol of collaboration, vision and shared commitment to students,” said Dr. Thompson. “It embodies the hopes and dreams of the community and the transformational opportunities that a facility of this nature will bring.”
Following the ceremony, families, staff and community members enjoyed refreshments before taking guided tours of the new school. The day marked not only the official opening of Aurora Composite but also the beginning of a new chapter for education for the Manning area.
