While many look to urban centres for job opportunities, up North in Alberta’s REDI Region a variety of rewarding career opportunities await, especially within municipal government. It’s a bold, strategic move toward greater job satisfaction, room for advancement and more disposable income.
“The Regional Economic Development Initiative [REDI] is working with its municipal partners to promote career opportunities within our region, which consists of Mackenzie County, High Level, Rainbow Lake and Paddle Prairie,” said REDI Manager Andrew O’Rourke.
The Northwest Alberta economy was largely built on the back of agriculture, forestry and oil and gas. However, there’s much more to these vibrant communities.
Since 2016, the region’s population has surged by nearly 25 percent, and regional building permit values have skyrocketed by 265 percent. As a result, local governments are actively succession planning and considering future workforce needs. Therefore, career advancement is not just a possibility; it is actively encouraged.
“As experienced employees retire and communities continue to grow, we need the next generation of professionals to help deliver the essential services residents rely on every day,” said REDI Vice-Chair and the Town of High Level Mayor Josh Lambert.
Each municipality in the REDI Region has unique operational needs, so their municipal workers develop highly specialized skills.
Some gravitate to administration or finance to use their strategic leadership and budgeting skills, while others prefer public works, so they can focus on engineering, road maintenance and heavy equipment. Additional opportunities span economic development, community services, HR, IT, emergency services and more.
“Working for a municipality in the REDI Region is an opportunity to make a real difference where you live,” said Lambert. “Whether you’re maintaining infrastructure, supporting recreation, planning future growth or serving residents directly, your work has a visible impact on your community every day.”
Psychologically, seeing the impact you’re making at work is a gift that keeps giving. Numerous workplace studies show “having an impact” and “purpose” are among the top predictors of employee fulfillment.
“Our municipalities also offer the chance to gain experience across a wide range of responsibilities, build strong relationships with colleagues and residents and enjoy outstanding quality of life,” said Lambert.
Rainbow Lake CAO Jason Harley says they are fully staffed, but they stay on the lookout for skilled people to support various operational requirements, whether it is in finance or equipment maintenance.
“Although we are a smaller municipality, we operate an airport, internet service provider and gas utility, so we have diverse workforce needs,” said Harley. “There is a work and life balance here. You can finish work at 4:30pm and be home by 4:35pm or sooner.”
Harley says outside recruitment is not easy.
“Ideally, we would like to hire people who have previous northern experience. The North is not for everyone,” said Harley. “If you live in Rainbow Lake for six months, you will be adopted by the community. People are simply happy to be with others who have the determination and openness to living in a northern climate.”
“One of our priorities is connecting with talented professionals who already call Northern Alberta home,” said Lambert. “They already understand the lifestyle, values and unique opportunities of northern communities, so they are more likely to build long-term careers here.”
In addition to earning higher wages and paying less in taxes, housing costs are noticeably lower in the North. As of 2025, a two-bedroom unit in the REDI Region was $1,269/month compared to the provincial average of about $1,750. And, purchasing a home locally generally costs less than half of what it would in a major centre.
“We have affordable communities, short commutes and incredible access to the outdoors,” said Lambert.
For those drawn to the country, acreage life in Mackenzie County provides space for large yard projects and animals—not to mention experiencing peace and quiet and the chance to be one with nature.
“We always have some positions available at the County, often in administration, finance or in skilled labour,” said Mackenzie County CAO Darrell Derksen. “We have apprenticeship programs for mechanics and positions like that…And, when it’s the right fit, we certainly support people looking for opportunities to advance their position or their credentials.”
