How New Eateries in Spirit River are Enhancing the Community
The culinary choices in the Town of Spirit River are growing thanks to a recent boom in new restaurants and dining options.
Spirit River’s economic and business landscape has recently shown significant growth after experiencing a few challenging years.

“I think what we experienced was typical for the post-2020 Alberta timeframe when the economy was still recovering. However, in a small centre the success or failure of businesses is definitely more noticeable,” said Spirit River CAO Steve Jack. “Recently, there has been an upswing in positive changes.”
Spirit River’s surge in new restaurants and businesses can be attributed to many things. Jack suggests that a population increase, a strong energy sector, economic diversification backed by a supportive regulatory environment, and the innovative mindset of community leaders and elected officials could be contributing factors.
“I believe a series of events and partnerships led to the upswing. We’ve been working together to attract more people and businesses by strengthening our regional impact in what we call the G5 area. This area includes the Village of Rycroft, Birch Hills County, MD of Spirit River No. 133, Saddle Hills County and the Town of Spirit River,” said Jack.
As a municipality, the Town of Spirit River attracts new businesses, and supports existing ones, by offering targeted resources and incentives.
“We’ve implemented tax incentives for new developments, purchased land to allow for expansion and changed bylaws and zoning to accommodate new businesses,” said Jack.
Prioritizing quality of life, economic growth and community cohesion, the Town aims to create opportunities that encourage younger generations to stay as well as have resources for residents to age comfortably in their community.
According to Jack, new businesses are key to economic growth. They bring job creation, diversification, improved services, increased local spending, attraction and tourism and an overall improved quality of life for residents.
“Welcoming new establishments to small, northern, rural towns stimulates economic, social and cultural development, which can all lead to a more vibrant and sustainable community,” said Jack. “Altogether, I feel these changes contribute to a higher standard of living and the town’s long-term sustainability.”
Spirit River’s new restaurants bring fresh energy to the town, and they play a role in its growth and development. These establishments not only provide exciting new dining options for residents, they also attract visitors and draw more attention to the area, which boosts the local economy.
Diverse culinary experiences have the power to create stronger community connections, encourage tourism and enhance the town’s appeal as a vibrant and thriving destination in the North.
